Guide's are roughly 1000฿ per day. Additional car with driver add around the 2000฿ mark - Depending on the mileage you have in mind.

Some guides will act as guide AND driver, which may bring that rate down a touch.

Best idea is to contact a few of the recommended guides, or whoever you had in mind, with an idea of what you want to cover, and ask for a quote;

A guide in the Chiang Rai area is generally 800 baht per day. If the guide drives the car (rather than you having a separate driver) they generally still charge only the 800 baht per day. If you add a driver, that cost is usually another 300 to 350 baht per day. There are some benefits to having the driver and guide be separate, as the driver can pay attention to the road while the guide is pointing out sites, providing cultural and historical information and answering your questions. But, if you are trying to save money, having the guide also drive the vehicle is one way to do so.

As Fourb2 has said, the cost of a car depends on how far you are going, as the fuel cost will vary with the distance you drive. It will also depends on whether you have a car or a van. The van is slightly more expensive. A van for a day to the Golden Triangle will run about 1,900 baht per day (but 2,200 to 2,250 if you add in the cost of the driver). A van to Mae Salong, about 2,200 per day (but 2,500 to 2,550 if you add in the cost of the driver). If you are staying close by the Chiang Rai area and not going further than the White Temple, Bulls Run, Ruammit and some other local sites, it might be 1,600 baht per day without a driver.

Today received a price for Tony (Smiles) and he gave the following:-

The price for 2 persons is 5,000 baht ( All included )

- Private boat for 1 hour trip

- Elephant riding for around 2 hour

- Lunch and Drinking Water on route

- Local transportation back to town

- Speaking English Tour-Guide (Me)

Think it also includes visit to hot springs and waterfalls and visit to hilltribe but getting this confirmed by Tony. Seen a few reviews saying how good he is, did try and get hold of jermask but unable to. Guess prices must be similar with all guides?

If you want to break down the costs, here is some additional information:

-The long tail boat ride to Ruammit is 700 baht per boat. You can fit 6 to 7 people in the boat, plus the boat driver. The cost does not increase for the number of people in the boat.

-Elephant riding is 600 baht per person for about 2 hours.

-Lunch would generally run about 150 baht per person (at most)

-A few bottles of water each might run 50 baht per person (at most)

-There is no cost to visit the waterfall, other than the cost you have already paid for your transportation to/from Chiang Rai and your guide costs

-The hot springs is also on the way. If you actually go in the hot springs, I believe the cost now is about 100 baht.

The above would cost a total of about 1500 baht. At a cost of 5,000 per day, that leaves about 3500 baht that you are paying for transportation and guide. The trip from a Chiang Rai hotel to the boat launching for the long tail boat could be anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes in a car (15 minutes from down town, less than 5 minutes from Baan Nattawadee). The driving time from Ruammit back to Chiang Rai, via the waterfall and/or hot springs, might be 30 to 45 minutes. The cost of transportation would be higher if you are going on the raft trip outside of Ruammit, as in that case you have to drive from Chiang Rai to the raft launch, which is probably 50 minutes.

Often times people going to Ruammit also have the driver/guide take them to the White Temple in the same day. There is no entry cost for the White Temple. The cost estimate in my post above of approximately 1600 baht per day for a van/fuel if you are staying near Chiang Rai would include going the 15 minutes south to the White Temple and stopping at other sites in and around Chiang Rai, such as temples, the Buddhist Meditation Cave etc.

Happy planning and safe travels,

Broder
