Elephants- Chnag mai

Hi all,

Spending 5 days in Chang mai next month and want to give the kids a great 'elephant experience'. Thinking of making a day of it. I dont want to support the 'less than ideal' setups, but keen to head to a genuinely positive type of 'elephant orphanage'.

Any suggestions who we might spend a day with the elephants with?

In the Chiang Rai area there are two options for visiting/riding elephants. The first is Ruammit, which is about 20 minutes to the northwest of Chiang Rai. No tricks, no shows, just riding elephants in the river, around the village and in the jungle if you prefer. Like any place where you can ride elephants, the elephants have been trained to tolerate humans riding them. You can ride in a basket or on the neck of the elephant.

The second option is the Anantara resort which has a small well run elephant camp. Here you can ride through the jungle and in the river and take a half or full day mahout training course. You can visit the elephants any time during the day at the camp if you are a guest of the resort. Anantara is about an hour north of Chiang Rai in the Golden Triangle area, just outside the town of Sob Ruak.

Safe Travels,

Broder

Adam - you've posted this on the Chiang Rai forum. You'll get better responses about Chiang Mai if you post it on the Chiang Mai forum.

Have a look at The Thai Elephant Home as an option. Ethical and not as expensive as some. They have a two hour package - or longer.

Caroline.
