Buses are available from the bus station in Hatyai and are more comfortable and safer than minibuses. Also they have a toilet on board, and the government VIP aircon buses usually give you a pack lunch free. There are lots of touts at Hatyai bus station who try to steer tourists in the direction of their travel agency which is nothing to do with the bus station. They want you to use their sometimes overcrowded minibuses. If you want to explore Hatyai first there are plenty of other travel agencies near the centre of town which have daily minibuses to Phuket. The journey is about 6 hours if there is only one stop for a meal petrol toilet etc. Although there have been attacks by terrorists on minibuses these have been in the Yala, Narattiwat and Pattani area and near Sungai Golok. I am not aware of any problems with buses going to Phuket., but ask locals for up to date info when you are there. However I have had things stollen from my luggage on two occassions while doing a 20 hour trip from Bangkok to Hatyai. This may have been while luggage was underneath in the hold of the bus (often there is a guy who sleeps in there) or it may have been when I had to leave my rucksack in a minibus while I went to the toilet. Often there are so many changes of minibus to travel agency to other minibus etc that it can get quite confusing when you are tired. Often with minibus trips they take advantage of you by separating you into different groups all going to different places in different vehicles and making you stop for indeterminate time at their friends restaurant while they find another vehicle etc, and then later on you find that you end up in the same place as everybody else. It is all a ruse to get you to buy food at their mates place or to separate you from the other travellers so you are not sure where you will end up and they have a chance while you are alone and your luggage is unattended for a few minutes to rummage through it..

What time does VIP bus leaves from Hat Yai to Phuket? I've read that there's only one VIP bus per day. Thanks . Hope someone can reply fast as I'm finalizing my itineraries.
