Several months ago I asked on this forum about getting the tourist train to the River Kwai and in particular about booking the ticket online if you were not going to be in Bangkok well ahead of time (tickets apparently sell out)
This is to let anyone interested know that it turned out to be relatively easy.
I emailed the Thailand Train ticket office on email@example.com (big thankyou AjarnAndy for tracking down this email info for me) explaining that I would only arrive in Bkk the day before I wanted to travel and asked about booking tickets online.
They replied with a website link, log-in ID and a password. I followed the instructions and tonight have recieved confirmation that my ticket will be issued and sent to my Bkk hotel for our collection on arrival.
Costs involved were:
2x tourist train tickets @ 120 TBH = TBH 240
2 x Handling Fee (NON REFUND): THB100 per person x 2 = THB200
Delivery Fee : THB100 per booking to our hotel
Credit Card Surcharge 3.5% (NON REFUND): THB19
Total (EXCLUDE DELIVERY FEE) : THB559
Total payment in AUD $19
I accept that handling & delivery fees are more than the actual ticket but we're happy with the price of this ticket (particularly in comparison with train tickets here in Australia or in Europe.
We plan on taking the tourist train to Nam Tok, hiring a taxi to Hellfire Pass and back to Kanchanaburi for an early evening bus back to Bkk. We are really kooking forward to visiting The Bridge and Hellfire Pass and expect tht it will be a highlight of our time in Bangkok.
