Train to Kanchanaburi from Bangkok

We are planning on riding the train from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi in May. Does it matter which Bangkok airport we fly into? We will be coming up from Singapore, plan to spend a couple of days in Kanchan and then return to Bangkok for a couple of days. MDH is especially interested in riding the train across the bridge.

Hi,

No, it doesn't really matter which airport you fly into. However, do note that the Kanchanaburi service departs from Thonburi station not Hualamphong which is the main railway station. Since MDH is keen on riding the train perhaps you should consider taking it all the way to Nam Tok which is at the end of the line. And, from there it is 20 kms to the Hellfire Pass.

Thanks very much - Is there an advantage to taking the early train as opposed to the later train? We will be staying 2 nights in Kanchanaburi.

Hi,

I would opt for the earlier train and take it to the end of the line at Nam Tok. From there you could take the same train to Kanchanaburi or walk down to the main road and get a bus to Kanchanaburi. Even better is to visit the Hellfire Pass on the same day. From Nam Tok it can be reached by bus or songtaow. And, from the Hellfire Pass it is possible to reach Kanchanaburi by bus.

Hi

The first train is 7.45am from Thornburi. What time does your flight get in? Or are you staying one night in Bangkok first?

As for taking the train all the way to Nam Tok and then visiting Hellfire Pass first, I would ask that you consider your luggage. If you are not carrying a lot, it will not be a problem carrying them while you walk to the road and catch a bus. If not, it would be better to get a song teow to take you to Hellfire Pass.

Do note that you can leave luggage just inside the Hellfire Pass museum.
