Spiders & Snakes in Krabi?

My wife and I are thinking about spending a week at the Krabi Sofitel in March but my wife has a bit of a fear of spiders. What are the chances we will come across spiders and how big are they likely to be? Small spiders are not really an issue but we saw a massive spider on holiday in Bali and that freaked he out for the rest of the week. I know it sounds silly, but if she sees something then she will not relax, which kind of defeats the purpose of the holiday!!

Also, are we likely to come across any snakes? We will spend most of the time around the hotel (we might pop into Ao Nang) and we also want to visit some of the islands off the coast, but we are unlikely to go treking in the rain forest.

Thank you in advance for your help, it is much appreciated!

Anywhere in Thailand (Krabi & PhiPhi included) there are snakes and spiders. The chances of coming across a snake are very very small and they will do their best to avoid humans; spiders you are most likely to see small ones but not that often, These creatures are a part of tropical life.

I've seen a few snakes in different parts of Thailand but they weren't the King Cobra,Damn, would have loved to have seen one of those in the flesh, from a distance of course.

Don't come to Queensland as we have the Bird eating spider which is the size of a dinner plate, all black and hairy but mostly preys on birds and other wildlife.Oh and we also have Crocodiles,Tiger Sharks,Blue Ring Octopus,Funnel Web spiders,Cane Toads and 9 of the 10 most deadliest snakes in the world

In Bali, you may have seen the Golden Orb spider, which is harmless but quite big when spread out on it's web.

its not the snakes or spiders you need to worry about - its the fast moving red centipedes ('Dtah-Gahb' in Thai). They hurt. Alot. I can voucher for that!

We have been to Thailand twice, first visit never saw a spider or snake once, but on our visit this year we stayed at Amari vogue,Krabi (which was fantastic,by the way) a green tree snake decided it wanted to share my sunbed, down by the pool, I got quite a fright. The staff assured me it was not poisonous and moved it to a tree nearby.A couple of days later in Phuket, Amari Coral Beach Resort,my husband saw another small olive green snake on the path to breakfast.I don't know how common it is to see snakes or whether it was just a freaky thing that we happened to come across two snakes on our visit, both of the snakes took off very quickly when they realised there were people around. The snake at Krabi apparently comes to the pool area every day.

I think we saw the saem snake Adrian & Kellie! We were dining in the restaurant near the beach and it came right through...the only snake or spider we saw on our 22 night trip of Thailand.

We stayed at Sofitel for 5 nights and never saw a snake or spider there. We had a gecko guarding or door way to eat anything that came in his territory.

The only time we saw a spider was when we were walking through a jungle path and they were falling down from the trees.

So my advise is stay at the sofitel but dont do any tours that takes you through jungles or into their habitat

On our trip in January 2009, we didn't see any snakes whatsoever when we were there, and we even stayed a few days in the jungle! ( Khao Sok National Park). We saw 1 spider ( not very big) up in a web in a tree in Chiang Mai... the only spider I saw ( thank god, I am scared of them too). Did see a few carpenter bees, didn't know what they were first time I saw them though.. kinda looked like beetle/bees so that's what I called them till I got home and found out they were carpenter bees. Had I known they were bees, I might not have gotten quite so close to them to take a picture, lol.. I'm anaphylactically allergic to bee stings. :\

Anyway, other than that, saw a few ants in the jungle.. but that's it for bugs. Was pleasantly surprized lol. Not sure if it was cuz it was the dry season or what, but I'm not complaining!
