Debit Cards

My wife and I both have a NAB visa card that is attached to our cheque account. They've just sent us both a debit card. What's the difference? I only ask because we have always used cash and travellers cheques in Thailand.

Debit cards have the convenience of a credit card but you can only spend money that is in the account.ie if only $1000 in account you can only spend $1000 .if stolen or scammed they'd can only rack up amount on card not your huge credit card limit. It can be used exactly like credit card just using your money. You could keep small amount in the account and then transfer more money when you run out. Has security like credit card if it is a visa debit card. You can also use it at ATM to withdraw money just like a normal account.many people say easier than travelers cheques

In Thailand you won't be required to enter a PIN except at ATM machines. So it's a great security risk to carry your normal credit cards around. These debit cards limit how much a thief can buy if they steal your card.

we went to Nab and got a gold card which doesn't charge you an exchange rate. it also costs $10 a month but we changed it back to a normal saving account when we came back and because it was before the end of the month were not charged this. We have left it as normal till we go back to thailand in Feb and will just change it over again before we go. We put a certain amount in it and if we need more we can transfer funds ( our Daughter does it for us) if it is stolen we only loose whats in there. we used ATM's and efpos when in thailand with it.
