Service and Taxes

When you see an advertised prices in a bar/restaurant are those prices always subject to S & T's, or are they included?

What about in shops/supermarkets are there any taxes added at the till?

No charges or taxes are added at the till in supermarkets.

Where I eat there is no ++ (tax and service), but upmarket places it is more common. It should state it on the menu if extras added.

I agree.. Stores show 'shelf' prices or 'tag' prices WITH all required tax-- that being the classic 7% VAT... and that's all retailers down to the street level.

Restaurants tend NOT to do the same.. I find it's more common for menu prices to be displayed without or BEFORE the mandatory 7% VAT and the non-governmental controlled service charge.

I differentiate the two as the 7% VAT is set by Thai law and the business has no authority to waive it or change it any any case. However, Service Charges (commonly 10% but can be higher) are different; they're under the sole control of the business and can be waived, raised or lowered as they see fit.
