Taxies and 5 passengers.

Hi All

We are off to Phuket(Patong) in a couple of weeks.

There are 5 of us and I want to know how common the taxi vans will be?

Thanks

For 5 adults plus luggage you will need a minivan. To avoid any hassles check the FAQs for recommended drivers and pre book a van.

Yep. If it were just 2 of you you could save a few bucks taking the meter taxi, but when it's 5 (plus luggage) you are far better off pre-booking a van and driver. Earlier this year we paid 800 baht total for 5 of us (one way) in a lovely big van with a TA recommended driver (Manop). On previous trips we've used other drivers and the price was similar. If you can't be bothered and plan to just grab a van when you get there, there will be vans available. Budget from 1000-1500 baht, though I'm sure some drivers will ask for more on the off chance you don't know the prices. You can get baht at the ATM at Phuket airport, or the money changers there. The rate is not quite as good as in town, but not awful. We change $100 to get us going. Don't forget your free local sim card.

Thanks

Actually the airport transfer is sorted.

What I really meant was when we are going on day trips or say we go out and decide to grab a cab back to the hotel.

Two adults one 6" male one smallish wife and 3 slim kids 16 to 10

Cheers

90% of taxis you find will be 5 seaters only, and the driver will want one of them.

You may need to look at booking a van for private tours.

Tours that you book on the streets normally come with hotel pick-up and drop-off so in those cases transport won't be an issue.

For day tours it might be better pre-arranging a van and driver. For those times when you are just needing to get back to your hotel, just catch 2 cabs. Make sure they switch on and use their meters. Cabs in Bangkok are great value, even if you have to share 2. They are all pretty much Toyota Corollas so don't expect to fit more than 4 passengers in (not that anyone should expect any driver to break the law for them anyway! )

If it is just for going ack to your hotel you can use the tuk tuks that are everywhere. We have 6 of us that fit in 1 tuk tuk. If you are looking for a vehicle for a day trip have. Look at the ones recommend by TA in the FAQ.

Hope you have a great trip.

Yes, tuktuks will fit and using these will give you flexibility. I would not prebook a minivan for most things but go for the tuktuk.
