Patong is the wild side of Phuket.

It is not everyones cup of tea but it can be a lot of fun.

Taxis in Phuket are quite expensive and the prices continue to increase especially to and from Patong. But I would prefer to stay our side of patong and take a taxi in to explore.

In August the weather may be a little unpredictable for boat tours, though Phang Nga bay is usually a fairly safe bet as being in a bay the waters are protected. Phi Phi island is also a nice place to visit however the weather can make the 50km journey out there a little uncomfortable or if you book a reputable company you many find your tour cancelled for safety reasons.

Tours to the islands vary significantly in price and this variation usually correlates directly to the amount of service, safety and the enjoyment you will get out of your day. You can pick up low budget tours on the street or in your hotel lobby however you get what you pay for (a 1200 baht ticket might get you on a speed boat with 80 other guests). Also be aware that in Phuket there is a strong culture of agents charging commission from tour companies for each guest they sell a tour. With the end result being that the agent will sell the tour that pays the most commission regardless of the quality of the tour. My advice is that if the tour company is not on trip advisor be skeptical about booking them through an agent.

AND use your own judgement about the weather, locally run tour companies will not cancel regardless of the conditions. Look on wind guru Phuket if the forecast is for winds over 15 knots or waves over two meters it is not going to be pleasant or safe at Phi Phi Island.

Quality tour companies (all found on trip advisor) with good solid reputations will cost more, and are best booked directly through the company. Tours with good quality companies to Phi Phi Island and Phang Nga bay start with nuditours at 3250baht, offspray leisure is about mid range in prices at around 3500baht and Laguna Sea tours and simba being the upper end of the spectrum. All of these companies are foreign managed and maintain high standards of safety and service.

There are also a number of land based tours that you might be interested in such as "amazing bike tours".

The Aquarium is also pretty good value for some thing to do, If you go to the aquarium don't forget to follow the beach track to see the baby turtles that are kept as part of the turtle rehabilitation program.

For good steak Sam's steak house is hard to beat, and for any of your western style indulgences you can find at Jungcelon, in Patong.

If you like hanging out at the beach there is a number of very cool beach bars and clubs, Catch and Bimi in surin, Nikki beach bar at layan beach and Xana beach bar in Bang Tao.

Have a good holiday.

Apart from the Companies that Sean Mentioned above, there is Phuket Sail Tours and Phuket Alternative Tours. PST has been operating in Phuket for a long time and has a great reputation, as does Offspray, Simba, and John greys
