Do People carry their Passports with them?

I've just noticed on the UK government website that it is law that tourists carry their passports with them at all times?

Does anyone actually do this, and has anyone ever had any problems?

As far as i am aware, but i will be corrected if i am wrong, you only have to carry photo id of some sort like a drivers License. We carry a copy of our passports in our wallets and have a photo of the passport on our locked Phones just in case but we have never been stopped or asked in over 18 trips overseas.

Agree with Pete, although I have to admit I have never carried any form of ID.

I never carry any ID, it is locked in the room safe as well.

This is not just for Thailand but every country I have ever been to. Never had a problem.

I think unless you need to hire a vehicle or get into trouble with police, you should never really need it.

Cheers.

Hi, I agree, I never carry my passport with me. Lock it in the safe. I have never needed it unless booking into my hotel. I dont always carry my phone with me either.

I have experienced that you will need your passport if you want to exchange money. Other than that, I agree with the other posters.

We've also found at some places like airports and Central Festival a passport (or passport photo on phone) is required to get wi-fi.

Hi, I have never had to show my passport for money. I take cash not travellers cheques. I think a photo copy is a good idea, especially if there is a accident etc.

If you go to bank, or exchange shops in Central, you will always be asked for passport, if you want to exchange money. I don't know how it works at exchange shops near the beach.
