Isann Dish specialities

We will have one evening in Udon Thani and will stay near the night market.

What are the local specialties do you recommend we should try?

Thank you.

Lots to choose from! What are your thoughts on chillies and fermented (I.e. left in a bucket for a year) fish? Yes or no?

Hi

Any " Larb" dish ( cooked mince of pork, beef , fish duck ) with herbs and species. Or any Tom yum Issan style ( Tom siap ) plus Som Tam Issan with sticky rice ...enjoy

what ever you chose, make sure it is prepared fresh in front of you. SomTam of course, somtam tai, if not wanting to spicy, as plenty of chili juice left over from the one made before yours. And tell them 'my ow pu' meaning 'no want crab', a strong source of intestinal trouble. becareful with this specialty, as the 'nam pla' should be cooked, many are not. you might want to get this at the Central Plaza food court, downstairs, as will use bottle 'nam pla' = fish sauce. many vendors simply use uncooked fermented fish sauce, another strong source for intestinal trouble along with liver flukes, but that's another day.......LOL.

'Laab' is another Isan favorite.

Get a whole grilled fish also.........damn tasty.

link above for some suggestions, Carrot shop located at Preecha Market, and I eat there on a weekly basis, and know the family well. Preecha Market is the 1st night market you come up on heading pass Mr Tong's bar, on the left heading toward RR station. you'll see the driveway with large stage / vid screen in the back. market is open about 5 PM. If pass the 7-11 at the intersection, you passed it. Using 7-11 or KFC as reference, Preecha market is behind 7-11, and you'll pass street vendors between main entrance to food court area on 7-11 intersection.

Across from 7-11 looking left, is CenterPoint market. huge bbq / grilled fish section on the corner, though not my preference eating curbside, then left of that, is some street vendors, continue on, and huge food area, mostly geared for take-away. though you will find some deserts, mango/sticky rice, nice, though may be a bit pricy, out of season, but if never having, splurge. Also if not wanting spicy, theres a shishkebab chicky, doing nice orange, regular, spicy chicken/pork/beef on skewers w/veggies. also a bbq squid vendor along there, on skewers.

non Isan, a lass makes some pretty good apple pie, along with some unusual 'thai' versions, coconut and something, corn, a pumpkin, few others, and the always popular, hotdog and spinach............LOL, though she calls it ham. generous slices for ฿ 40

at 7-11, across the street looking right and next to Centerpoint market, divide by road to RR station is UD Bazaar. behind KFC and the shops selling clothes, shoes and what not, is the very large food court seating, 3 sided by food vendors, a bit more selection from Preecha and Centerpoint, though if the weekend, good luck finding seating.

OK I think we are in trouble, we will hve just one night in Udon and can see possibilities for several meals already.

The duck sounds quite good, but the fish does too.

we will be there first week in December.

Can you, please, send me the directions for the duck breast place?
