Port el Kantaoui to Kairouan and Mahdia

we will be for the first time in Tunisia in Mid April.

As we will stay in Port El Kantaoui, we would like to visit Kairouan and Mahdia.

Anyone knows how is the best way to get there? Public transportation, taxi or rent a car?

Thanks

PEK is great as it offers a good variety of restaurants, shops and Hanibal park and water slides, boat trips from dock - pirate ships and catamaran. Try the Tuk Tuk train to Sousse and visit the Grand Mosque and Ribat and madena (vist sook with fear but be cautous as they strive on tourist. It's an experience to visit, as merchants try to convince you to buy.

A number of ways can be considered for targeted visits.

1) you can take a bus to Sousse approx 1 dinar, from there take a taxi approx 3to4 dinars (for the ride) to louage station (approx 7 dinars each) that have specific destinations Sousse -Mahdia(city to city transportation for a fixed fee) very cheap fares for distances travelled)

**note louage is a mini van that waites till 8 people fill van and then leave for designated destination.

For Kairouan you can inquire at Louage station when you travel for Madhia, I believe there is no public transportation for this destination (bus train or louage) Your best bet is a taxi for a fixed price and if you are 4 people divide fare which will be a reasonable result. It's not far from PEK, just ask different taxis drivers (when taking taxis to Sousse)to establish what is reasonable.

You may find different tour operators at your hotel listing different excursions for Tunisia. If not a neighbouring major hotel (visit their loby and posting for different excursions at reasonable prices are offered.(they have at least 10 or 15 different operators trying to get the business in your area) You may discover that just your cost of going to and from Mahdia (in taxis, louage and other) will just about cover a tour with the added bonus of visiting 1 or 2 additional sites with less hassel.

*If you are condidering exceptional ruins "Dougga" approx 2.5 hrs from PEK (tour)early morning -back approx 6 pm.

*Monastir A very clean and city by the Mediterraneen Great Mosoleum "Bourguiba" and Ribat which is wonderful to visit. The madena is clean, approx 1 hr from PEK. more pleasant to visit than Sousse sook.

*El Jem is not far away another great site - The amphitheatre - in beautiful condition -you can almost see the gladiators.

The key here - all depends on time available and budget planned for activities.

You will have a great time as Tunisians are very cordial pleasant and of service.

**A small note of importance - take just the necessary money for daily activities and shopping, do not flash money publically to attract undesirebles, they are there in every city in this wonderful world. Good judgement prevails.

Be safe , have fun, and above all enjoy the people, the scenery, the beach and Tunisia

Mahdia can be visited from the metro station (near the harbour) in Sousse. It will run to Monastir and Mahdia. A return fare cost just under 5Dinar and travelling time is 1½ hrs.

Look at FahrplanSNCFT.html and click on suburban trains for the timetable valid till 30.06.08.

Train is an option that I did not experience, as I was looking for fastest route and did consider time line involved. It's a question of choice and a good one with the offer of comfort. It is also a great way to see the landscape while relaxing.Good alternative.

have fun and a good holiday

Thank you both for the helpful information.

I'm gonna stay there only with my wife, so it maybe will be expensive to get by taxi...

We've read some positiv stuff about Kairouan, so we are coruios about it ... as we gonna stay only a week, we don't pretend to go further than Sousse, monastir, mahdia and Kairouan...

Thanks

Sam :-)

We went to Kairouan on an organized trip through our tour operator - not very expensive (we went to other places in the morning and Kairouan in the afternoon)and from memory only about an hour/hour & a half from PEK.

If you're looking for some souvenirs - this is the place to go, in terms of pottery, leather etc.. loads cheaper than anywhere in the resorts it's a place near the "Centre D'Artisanat De Tapis Grand Choix". If you go on one of the organised trips - it's near the coach park, on the outside of the medina wall - we were taken up onto the roof of the shop - as you can look over the entire town. We also had the opportunity to enter the Grand Mosque, and see a camel pulled well.

Well worth the trip.
