Have you been here in August with kids?

We're considering travelling to Alanya/Side in the beginning of August. We've two kids, 10&12. But everyone says its a horrible idea! It'll be way too hot, and impossible to go on trips like shopping, visiting waterpark or just for a walk. Is this true?

What's your experience? How was it for your family if you went in August? Please share.

I have been to Belek in August, and yes it is hot.

Make sure your accommodation/hotel has air con and this will help to sleep.

Most of the large hotels have their own waterparks and if you make sure your children are well protected from the sun you can enjoy your holiday. As for visiting and sightseeing, you would be better booking these for the latter end of your holiday when you have adapted to the heat.

Taking a walk may not be a good idea in the middle of the day when the sun is hottest, but early mornings or evenings can be quite pleasant.

Don't be put off by the temperatures - it can be just as hot in other parts of Europe too.

We usually go end of July / beginning of August and yes, it is very hot. I have 2 kids aged 11 and 8 and we've been taking them to Turkey in the summer for the last few years.

We spend nearly all our days round the pool and on the beach, as this is what we go for. We always book a hotel with water slides as they will keep the kids happy for hours!

We often will do shopping in the evenings once the temperature cools down but this is not an important part of a holiday for us.

If you plan to do a lot of sight seeing this is probably not a good time of year to go. We went to Ephesus a couple of years ago and despite arriving at 9am the heat was quite unbearable.

Another tip would be choose a hotel with plenty of trees and gardens for shade, we have done this the last couple of years and it's much better.

We are a family of sun worshipers and and water babies so this is a good time for us, but I would not recommend it if you are not.

We go to Turkey with our children in August most years now the are at school. Yes, it is very hot but it can be very hot in other Mediterranean countries too, it was 38 in Spain last year, which is similar to what you can expect in Turkey and the temperatures in Greece are very much like Turkey too.

Shopping is best done in the evening when it has cooled down, the shops are all open late anyway, same with going for a long walk, much nicer in the evenings. Waterpark is fine, just make sure the kids are covered in a high factor waterproof sun cream.

So don't let people put you off about the temperature, you will always get someone claiming it will be 50 degrees or something ridiculous, just ignore them, it isn't true!

We've never been in August for this very reason but might have to from next year.

One reviewer mentioned 38C in Spain well just be aware that temperatures will be much higher than that. We've often had 42C in late May/early June in Lara beach so in August it will be hotter.

The thermometers in resort are never right as the temperatures are taken in the sun, whereas real temperature is taken in the shade. It wont get to 47 degrees, it may reach 42 but 38 is more likely. Don't listen to the scaremongers ;)

The hottest ever temperature recorded in Turkey was 48 and that was during a heat wave in Mardin, an inland city in the East of Turkey, it never reaches anywhere near that hot on the coast.
