Advice on trustworthy local car hire in Kalkan

Hello

We have just booked a holiday based just outside Kalkan and want a car for two weeks. I know that booking at home will be easier, but usually more expensive. Any recommendations ?

Also would be glad to hear of any advice or recommendations on 'out of the way' local places to explore and find a more 'authentic' Turkey than the tourist hub.

Many thanks !

Hi, you don't mention if the holiday that you have booked includes a transfer from the airport.

If not, and you are flying into Dalaman, you could hire a car there and drive to your accomodation. I have used Metro Car Rental (an independent company based in Dalaman) on several occasions and theyhave proved to be very reliable with good cars and rental rates.

Alternatively I am sure that some of the Kalkanites who frequent this forum will be able to recommend some Kalkan firms. Some of these may be able to offer you a very economical deal that includes airport transfer, especially if you need the car for more than a week.

As for places to visit, you will be based in a very good area for day trips etc. and whilst obviously many of the better known areas will attract a fair number of tourists there are plenty of places in between where you will find more 'authentic' Turkish life.

There are many interesting places within easy driving distance, such as Patara with the longest, unspoiled and mostly empty beach in Turkey with the remians of a Lycian town very close by. You may hear others rant on about good beaches but I really do not think that, as far as sandy beaches in Turkey go, there is anything that compares with Patara, even the frequently mentioned Olu Deniz - which is also within a relatively easy day's drive should you wish to go further afield.

In addition, there are numerous other historical sites within a drive of about and an hour or so, such as Letoon, Pinara, Tlos, Xanthos to the west and sites such as Arykanda, Myra and Kekova to the east. Saklikent Gorge and the green lake at Gombe are also worth a visit and can be tied in with visits to other places.

As for other towns or resorts, Kas is just 23km east of Kalkan and Fethiye (rather larger) and places such as Kaya Koyu (and Olu Deniz) are about 90 minutes towards the west.

The scenery in this area (in my view) is as good as it gets and in particular the coastal road between Kas and Kalkan and another stretch between Demre and Finike are worth driving just for the sake of it.

There is quite a lot of further information available on this forum that you can find through the search facility or just by scrolling back through the various threads on the Kas, Kalkan and Fethiye forums.

You could also try

http://www.addatours.com/

and

http://www.centralrentacar.co.uk/

Both companies are based in Kalkan and will either deliver the car to your accommodation in Kalkan or leave the car at Dalaman for you to collect and drive to your destination (saving on airport transfers). Alternatively both will supply a driver to drive you from the airport to your desitnation at a very little cost, about 10GBP. Picking up the car from the airport (either with or without a driver) means you would be resposible for putting fuel in the car for the journey. An airport transfer includes fuel and 3TL road toll charge. Car hire (for more than 13 days is approx 25GBP per day. An airport transfer for 2 is approx 100GBP.

Have a great holiday in Kalkan (and the surrounding area)!
