Advice on Fethiye & Kas trip in May

We are thinking about flying to Dalaman and visiting Fethiye and Kas on a 10 day trip. We have the following questions:

What hotel/b&b availability to expect in May? Do we have to reserve hotels/b&b's upfront, or can we just "go and see"? Is it off-season (hotels closed?), high-season (many fully booked) or in between?

We would like to travel by public transport (bus), are there any relevant lines and timetables published on the internet?

Are there any sign-posted walking paths or good walking maps for the Fethiye and Kas area?

All other tips on where to (not) sleep and go are welcome as well.

I can only answer your questions regarding Kas - have you posted this on the Fethiye forum too?

May is considered low season and pretty much all the hotels and pansiyons will be open. You would only really need to book if you felt you needed "peace of mind" otherwise just turn up.

There is a good bus service between Fethiye and Kas. There are the large coaches that travel to Istanbul and Izmir twice a day plus the smaller buses.

Sorry can,t help with a web site.

If you get hold of a copy of the Lycian Way by Kate Clowes there is a map which corresponds with marked routes between Fethiye and Kas. You can dip in and out of various sections.

Hello,

Normally there is plenty availabily in May, unless you are fixed to stay in one certain hotel, you better make a reservation to not be disappointed. This as not all hotels are that large, so are quickly booked up. May can be sometimes busy, as there are many people who like to travel away from the school holidays.

It is very easy to travel between the two, there are very frequent busses from Fethiye bus station, during the day. By bus it will be about 2 hours for 110 kilometers. Be sure to take the coastal road bus!

The Lycian Way pats are very well way marked, if you intend to walk parts of this like said above by Aslan's mum, get yourself Kate Clows book, so you also have the map. The in the Fethiye area there are plenty of walks, mainly concentrated from and around Kayaköy, as that lies in the middle of the peninsula.

For Fethiye depending on where you like to stay; very close to the town center then it would be Karagözler, if you like t be close to the beach then Calis is the place (but that one is far more touristy) You could also stay very rural, only 7 kilometers from Fethiye is Kayaköy.

For Kas, I like the quiet part of the town, and I can recommend Hideaway.

Good luck!

In Kaş, there are hotels and pensions in the main town and others out on the peninsula. Most of the peninsula hotels are higher priced but that is not always the case. If you stay on the peninsula make sure the hotel will offer shuttle service, otherwise you will either have to take an expensive taxi or wait for a dolmuş (regular small bus) to come around.

If you stay in Kaş, and if you want to have really quiet evenings, you should make sure you are a few blocks away from the town square immediately next to the old harbor. There are some bars there which, occasionally, can have loud music and the sound carries straight up the streets for a few blocks. Of course, Kaş can not be compared to Bodrum or even Fethiye with its much lower sound levels.

In May, is is probably safe to wait until you arrive but it is nice to have a hotel arrange to pick you up at the bus terminal (otogar). (Make sure you get a mobile phone number and the name of the person you spoke to and bring a mobile phone that you can use in Turkey.) If you do not like the hotel you reserved, you can always move to another that you like better after having scouted around. I like Medusa Hotel for its location and many of its rooms have seaviews. There are other, equally nice hotels all along the same row as Medusa, take your pick.

Here is a Google map of many hotels in Kaş: http://tiny.cc/KasHotelsMap

AND a map of many places in Kaş: http://tiny.cc/KasSpots

Others have commented on the Lycian Way which actually starts in Fethiye and runs for almost 500 km to Antalya. There will be plenty of opportunity for walking. Several place in Kaş offer guided trekking but many people just strike out on their own, there are many people in Kaş who can advise you of day walks around the area. May is an excellent time to come, just at the start of the tourist season but not as crowded nor as hot as July/August.

Hope you enjoy your stay.
