We have always struggled to find decent exchange rates in Kas, in other resorts we have used jewellers etc.but ended up using the Post Office. Where is the best place sootycat?

Yes, the Post Office is the best place to change Money in Kas as the Bank's have 3 exchange rates the worst one being for cash changed over the counter.

The last time my husband came out here he brought a pre loaded cash card with him. He got his from Thomas Cooks but the Post Office also issues them. They work like a debit card but you pre load them with sterling before you leave the UK. You can then use it to get TL from the ATM's or pay for goods in shops etc., just like you would your normal debit card.

He said that the exchange rate at the time of each with-drawl was not much less than if he'd changes notes up and the service charge was reasonable. He chose this option as he had never liked traveling with or having to carry round large sums of cash. Then he could use the card back in the UK to clear the remining balance or leave the money on the card ready for his next trip.

How would the Post Office compare to the Is Bank, in Kas, regarding the exchange rate, as this is the bank I have used previously?

Also, if the Post Office was more favourable, what are the opening times during the week, in Kas?

The exchange rate between the banks and post office would only differ by a couple of Kurus, but what you have to remember is that neither the banks or post office have supplies of small change so both will round down the amount payable to you for example you change up £150 at the rate of 2.936 you should get 440.40 but they will only give you 440.00

The Post Offices opening times are the same as the banks 9am to 5pm

Hi Sootycat

I haven't used the post office (PTT) for some time but a few years ago it used to be open until about 9.00pm in the summer for limited services such as currency exchange. This was before it was temporarily moved around the corner whilst the original office was re-built.

Have they stopped that now?

Hi Adana

Could not say for sure if they have started the late nights again now that they are back in the new building and can't check at the moment as back in UK for a bit.

Hi - Just debating whether to buy Turkish Lira in the UK or in Kas (we are due out in just over a week) any tips on the best rates in Kas would be appreciated!

Thanks

Generally speaking you will get a better rate of exchange in Turkey than you will in the UK. Many people just take enough Lira to get through the first day or so and exchange the rest when they get there

Of course you need to consider security. Even in a small and laid back place like Kas you need to be careful if you are bringing large quantities of cash. You may want to check whether your accommodation has a decent safe.

Although many UK banks will charge for withdrawing cash at an ATM it may still be worth considering. I used my card recently and the difference in the rate, even allowing for charges was not great. Cards do vary from provider to provider however.
