Update on using toll roads

In researching our Turkey trip we read several times that you will get a big fine for driving on the toll roads without a toll card. This caused us to turn around at Izmir when the toll gate caught us by surprised without a card. It's a load of rubbish by misinformed people. You enter the toll road, drive to your destination and buy a toll card from the PTT office just before the exit toll booths. Takes 5 mins and costs 35 TL. A lot of worry for nothing.

I think you misunderstood. It is not"a load of rubbish".You bought a card, end of story.Had you not bought one then you would have been fined.Simple as that.

The electronic monitoring device would have sent the warrant for the fine to the hire car company who would then persue you for the money-and yes, they DO persue people, remember they have your credit card details.

The load of rubbish is that no one tells you that you can buy a card after your journey. Would have saved us an hour or more if we had known that simple fact.

The point being that you are actually supposed to buy one before you go on the toll roads.I am surprised the car hire company didn't provide you with one and also surprised that as you knew about them, having read so much, you didn't ask them for one when you collected the car.

You make assumptions based on your local knowledge. We drove from Paris so the car company could hardly be expected to provide one for each country. We tried to buy one in Ipsala when we crossed into Turkey and were told we wouldn't need it until Izmir. We were still looking for a Shell station to buy one in Izmir when we found ourselves at the toll gate. This post is to help others avoid the same problems in the future.

You're quite correct, TonyG, and I'm sorry if information we gave a year or so ago didn't help you. The systems are not suited to people who bring their own car from abroad.

In future, as you say, people should feel free to drive onto the motorway, using the HGS lane, and buy the necessary sticker at the first OPEN PTT office they find.

If the PTT at the motorway exit point is not operating (as at Selcuk yesterday, for example) you still have ONE WEEK before the charge has to be paid, at any PTT (Post Office) in town.

((The charge is 1.80TL per motorway use (=50p), and the "huge fine" is about £10.))

Not 1 week,I just asked my husband and he says it is 3 days grace before you are fined. The fine is 10 times what ever you didn't pay.So if you should have paid say,5TL then it is a 50TL fine.

Put into perspective that is more than a days wages for a great percentage of Turkish people,so yes,if you ask then they'll mostly say a big fine.

That's great info from both of you and will help lots of others in the future I think. You are right that the system does not help those who bring their own car which includes all those Germans, Greeks and Italians who come here for the summer, not just those of us from further away.
