Hi Betty

I'll keep it simple,

It is a Muslim observance, a bit like the Christian Lent where you give something up...

This year it is the whole of September,

It is basically a month of fasting, during daylight hours, so no food, water, ciggies, telly or nookie until it gets dark.

If you want more info have alook here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramadan

From a holiday point of view, visitors are unlikely to notice any changes.

But if you are lucky enough to be there at the end of Ramazan you will see some nice local traditions

My Apologies to my Muslim friends if they felt this was innapropriate.

We hosted a Turkish exchange student who was Muslim, but she only fasted a couple of days during Ramadan. She said it was the same as she would do there. It seems from the students I have met that most Turkish muslims don't observe Ramadan in the same way as other countries.

However they do have big celebrations at the end.
