A valuable lesson that you really need holiday insurance

We saw this in the newspapers yesterday and it's a horrific story.

Please make sure you are not like this family, and get some holiday insurance before you leave the U.K.

Couldn't agree more, a few years ago we left Dalaman on the Friday evening and didn't get home to Scotland until the following Wednesday. My husband took ill on the plane coming home and the Captain divereted the flight to Manchester, insurance took care of everything. You just never know the minute.

Very sad.

You should buy your travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday, and not wait until you're just about to go on holday.

Horrific story..

Never , never, never go abroad without travel insurance, you hear so many stories not as horrific as this of people having accidents with no insurance.... the cost of a holiday compared to the insurance cost is pennies nowadays, and NOT worth the risk..

There has been a discussion about this on the Marmaris forum

I feel so sorry for this family but cannot believe that they have gone on holiday to Turkey with two children and did not take out insurance. It is unthinkable to us. This year due to personal reasons we had to cut down on our spending on holiday but never did we think to cut down on our insurance.

It certainly is a lesson for anyone thinking about not taking out insurance.

Hope they make a speedy recovery.

Its surprising how many people go to Turkey and think the EHIC is valid there.

I spoke to a couple in May and they didnt take out insurance as they thought Turkey was in Europe!

Maybe this family also thought the EHIC card was valid in Marmaris.

Knitter - Ditto with Tunisia. And some folk get annoyed when you try and gently point it out!

And an EHIC has only got very limited medical value. It should never be used as a substitute for comprehensive travel insurance.

what a horrible fate! but relieved to hear they all survived.

but yes, a lesson to all. (americans don't seem to take out travel insurance as much, not sure why. we learned our lesson the hard way, tho NOTHING like this)

(knitter, even TA has Turkey listed in the Europe forums.....)

I did a price quote on Travel Guard for insurance for our trip. The cost would be between $2,200USD and $3,000USD for insurance depending on the choices of coverage. The medical benefit would be $15,000 USD for the $2,200 policy. The cost of insurance is about 15% of the coverage of the medical benefit. The other benefits are so pittance not even worth mentioning such as lost bag, delay, interruption.

$15,000 would not cover this burn treatment in the US. In the US, an ambulance minimum charge is $800. I know someone who went to emergency room for only 4 hours and got NO treatment, just a diagnosis and the charge by the hospital was $11,000USD. Eleven thousand dollars for only a diagnosis.

Why have insurance when the benefit is such a small amount? and the cost is so high?
