Currency Exchange

We are visiting Gocek next week and would be grateful for any advice on where we would obtain the best exchange rates for GBP.

There are no exchange offices in Göcek, but there are 5 banks where you can change money, plus 2 or 3 "stand alone" cash machines. The rates are going to be pretty much the same, although I have found that Işbank, which is behind the Tansaş supermarket usually gives a slightly better rate of exchange when taking money from an ATM.

It's always best, if using an ATM, to do so when the banks are open (9 to 5 Mon - Fri) in case your card gets swallowed.

Thank you for your reply. Do you the current exchange rate is at the moment and what % commission is charged. I'm wondering whether it might be better to exchange in the uk before we travel?

Hi Lynne, Its always said that the exchange rate is always better in Turkey than in the UK. Maybe convert 50 pounds or so to Lira before you go just to cover things like tips, bottle of water, taxi or whatever when you first arrive.

I don't think the banks charge commission for exchanging money (well they didn't to me last times I changes some sterling up - but then I paid it into my Turkish bank account). I did see one shop recently with a board outside it with an exchange rate - it was behind the taxi rank on the main square - think it might sell shoes or bags or something, but normally I just withdraw cash using an ATM from my UK bank account. Just check what your bank charges to withdraw cash overseas on a debit card - and don't use your credit card cos then I think you are charged interest from date of withdrawal. Best not to consider using Travellers Cheques - we gave up on them years ago - hard to find banks willing to accept them, and they charge commission.

Have a lovely holiday!

The closing bank rate yesterday was TL 2.8478 to 1 GBP.

It's certainly true that you will always get a better rate in Turkey than in the UK.

This morning's rate on the Garanti Bank site is GBP 1.00 = TL 2.7905.

In general terms you always get a better rate in Turkey than in the UK.
