7.2-magnitude earthquake hits eastern Turkey, 50 reported injured
HAKKARİ - Reuters
Sunday, October 23, 2011
A magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit near Van in southeastern Turkey on Sunday, Turkey's Kandilli Observatory and Research Institute said, and state-run media reported some buildings had collapsed and 50 people had been injured.
The institute said the earthquake struck at 1041 GMT and was 5 km deep. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the magnitude was 7.6.
My thoughts are with the many people affected.
Van is very very far away from İstanbul (over 1200 Kms), though big parts of Turkey are situated on fault lines
Thankyou for putting my mind at rest
Have you tried contacting your son?
He is the one to be putting your mind at rest.
has it hit marmaris i dont think it has but has it ?Edited: 25 October 2011, 18:42
No its hundreds of miles away from marmaris so you will be fine....
Just feel so sorry for all the turkish people,my thoughts are with them all..
In the 3rd millenium BC, somewhere in Upper Mesopotamia, humankind invented a very useful tool to help people understand where places are relative to each other. Unfortunately some people missed this invention.
Sarcasm combined with morning grumpiness aside, the name of the city and province affected by the earthquake is Van. No other place is affected. As far as touristic placs are concerned, Akdamar Church and Van Castle are the only places to which touristic visits may be affected.
...and Antalya is not in Marmaris either.
On second thought, I apologize for my previous post. I woke up, saw a thread in Marmaris forum asking whether Antalya is affected by an earthquake in Van, was still half asleep when writing that one. Sorry.

I take it you are refering to Google Earth?
