Sumela Monastery

Since Pegasus Airline have bargain price during end of december. I am thinking to take one day trip from Istanbul to Monetary by catch early flight to trabzon and late evening flight back to Istanbul just for visit Sumela Monastery. So anyone think is it possible to go there during end of december and could have enough time to enjoy taking photo around Sumela Monastery and back to airport. To go there do they have a bus or we do need to rental car

Thanks for your advice

Hi there,Best way is to hire a car and explore on own in a day. December is not a perfect time to be there however you will have plenty of time to take photos and walk around the monastery depending on your flight schedule. Bear in mind that the day time gets shorter in winters.

In addition you can also visit the noteworthy sites like hagia sophia,Ataturk's pavillion and Ortahisar fatih camii. Sites and museums will be open for visit, i believe during winter. It takes 30 minutes or less to drive city center from airport and additional 30 minutes to get to Sumela Monastery. You can drive untill the path that leads you to the monastery. It is a spectacular area and hopp you enjoy most out of it , in spite of rain and fog!

We recently did a tour to sumela Monastry while on a cruise ship. We booked with Euphrates tours.com and although we arranged it ourselves I am sure they would do something for you. There were eight or 10 people on the tour and it ost 50 euros each from Trabson cruise port, with a guide. You need a guide to explain what it is all about. Also hiring a car would be a bit of a nightmare as it is so congested at the monastry for somewhere to park. Well worth a visit. We also had lunch in a cafe in the gardens of the church there. That was lovely and relaxing. Julie and Benny from Sydney Australia
