Never rented as I have my own car but have made the trip many times. You just need to make sure the rental company is aware you are taking the car across the border and they give you the correct insurance. The actual drive is very easy and once across the border turns into a spectacular drive. Depending where you leave from on RAK the journey to the border is around 45 minutes. At the border your entry visa will be cancelled and you will pay around 35Aed per person departure tax. You will then be issued with an Oman visa at around 59Aed per person. The drive to Khasab will take around 1 hour but there are loads of places to stop for photo opportunities so allow a bit of leeway. At Khasab you can hire a dhow and take a spectacular trip into the fiords where you can do a bit of dolphin spotting and stop for a bit of snorkelling. On the return trip your Oman visa is cancelled and you are issued with a new UAE entry visa. If you troll back through this forum there are plenty of posts on the subject. If you need more specific info then ask away but it is a highly recommended trip.

Not from RAK, but have rented a car from Sharjah airport to drive across the border. As someone else said, just make sure you have the insurance for Oman and also a letter from the rental company giving approval to take the vehicle across the border.
