My Danang-Hue-Hoi An itinerary - Comments welcome!

We've managed to come out with a rough itinerary and since this would be our first trip to Central Vietnam, we'd really appreciate any advice or comments. Thanks!

Arriving in Danang in the evening, we may spend the night at a hotel either in the city centre or My Khe Beach (which is more lively at night?) and then set off on a car trip to Hue the next morning. We'll either spend 1 night at Hue or just do a day trip to Hue from Danang. If the latter, will we have time to see the Marble Mountains? Or do we need a separate day trip for that and HV Pass/China Beach, etc? If we stayover in Hue then should we take a train there and a car back? What's the better option?

Once we're done with Hue and Danang we'll take a cab to Hoi An where we'll check into a beach resort. Any idea how much are we looking at for cab fare? In Hanoi we encountered cabbies who rigged their meters. Not sure if this is also happening here. Once in Hoi An, we'll explore the town on our own (is that do-able?) as well as spend some time at Cua Dai beach. Then we'll head back up to Danang to catch our flight home.

Any comments?

I managed to contact one of the tour agents I found in this forum and they customised a land package for me. It'll start off with airport pickup, 1 night hotel (3-star) in Danang; next morning a private car will pick me up from the hotel and drive me to Hue with a stop over HV Pass, and once in Hue, stops in pagoda, citadel and 2 tombs, 1 night hotel (3-star) in Hue; next morning the same driver will take me to Hoi An with stops along the way at Cham Museum, Marble Mountains, China Beach etc.; then it's F&E with 3 nights accomodation in Hoi An (4-star); lastly airport transfer on my last day.

Sounds like a plan! Except that it's quite pricey to me so I'm still considering. With this itinerary I'll be able to maximise my time on the 2nd day. If I take a train, I won't get to Hue in time to join a day tour, given that I'll only be spending 1 night there.

Decisions, decisions!

Tough decision for you LOL.

I’m now reading for our trip to somewhere we know nothing about. Hubby wants to buy a package from home ;-)

We were in Vietnam last month. Hotel in Hue organised a car and driver for trip to Hoi An for $50. Stopped at Hai Van Pass, Marble Mountain and China Beach.

Definitely stay at least a day in Hue and do a trip to the tombs and Citadel. Far more interesting than any of the three places previously mentioned. I couldn't see the attraction with China Beach, it is a beach like anywhere else in the world with no sign the Americans were ever there.

Hi Geebee053, thanks for your reply. Did you need a guide for the trip from Hue to Hoi An? In our email correspondence, the hotel manager said we do not need a guide for that. Do you think Cham Museum and Marble Mountains can be explored on our own?

The driver was our guide, and even then he just dropped us at Hai Van Pass and Marble Mountain to do our own thing while he had a coffee.

The stop at Hai Van Pass is just to take in the view a bit better than you get while in the car, and to be harassed by women pressuring you to buy something. We reluctantly did and then found the same items in Hoi An for a third of the price.

Marble Mountain can easily be done without a guide. They sell a pamphlet at the ticket office that gives you more detail of the mountain and temples but it isn't really necessary.

We didn't go to the Cham Museum.

By the way Hoi An is easily explored on foot.

Thanks! Well the travel agent quoted USD122 per pax for private car driver/guide from Danang to Hue with stops at the Pass, Citadel, Pagoda and 2 Tombs; 1 night accomodation at Orchid Hotel in Hue (twin share); and driver/guide from Hue to Hoi An with stops at Cham Museum, China Beach and Marble Mountains (not sure of the order). This is the itinerary we requested but I think the price is pretty steep. It's cheaper to book through the hotel but I am just not sure how safe/reliable that is.

Comments, anyone?

You are right, $122 pp does sound expensive. We also stayed at the Orchid Hotel and they arranged our driver and car to Hoi An for $50.

Stopping at Hai Van pass and China Beach is free, Marble Mountain costs $1, the Citadel and tombs are $5 each and the pagoda is free. A night at the Orchid is about $30.

We did an organised tour of three tombs, the Citadel and Pagoda for $9 each plus entry fees. Lunch was also included.

You will have no trouble booking tours, taxis or anything for that matter at your hotel. They know exactly what they are doing as they do it every day. We did this at every stop, including our Halong Bay trip, and everything went well.

Orchid Hotel quoted USD55 for the Hue-Hoi An drive. Guess prices have gone up!

How much did you pay for your organised tour to the three tombs, the Citadel and Pagoda? Do you think these can be covered in 1 afternoon? If we decide to take a train (much cheaper) and say we get there at noon, I'm not sure if we have time to cover these. For the next day we'll be off on the Hue-Hoi An drive (how long will that take?).

Apologies for the endless questions!

Oh! I thought that was entrance fees! Kept thinking it was a private tour so it couldn't be that cheap. So it's a group tour I suppose! Thanks landie :)
