Kurobe Alps - Ice Wall

I will be going to Japan Kurobe Alpine route. I was advice to wear a therma wear.. Is it really so cold?

I have brought along a down feathers jacket, a 75% wool cardigan and gloves and hats, should I bring a long a scarf. I will be experiencing 2 days of winter with a weather of 0 degree to 20 degree celsius. Please advise as I will be leaving soon.

The altitude at Murode station is 2450m and there is a lot of snow around there.

You will be in heated vehicles when travelling and the stations are warm enough. However you will need the warm clothes to walk along the ice wall and look at the scenery at the stations en route. Depending on the time of the year when you make the trip you may need warm gear when you traverse the Kurobe dam wall.

If the weather permits and you have time, take one of the walks from Murode station.

I am going this April 30 at Murode, I have winter pants with velvet inner lining. Do I still need to wear a long john pants before wearing the winter pants.

As for the therma wear. Merino is definately warmer but once in the bus I will be over heated, so if I get the cotton or polyester is it warm enough with a layer of cardigan and feathers down.

See alpen-route.com/en/…climate-clothing

We did the trip in June 2011, later than your planned transit - see https://vimeo.com/42109324

Thermal wear may be needed for walking around at Murode, definitely not in transit.

Current forecasts for Toyama and Murode suggests that the weather will be cold but not bitter; however that view will be very subjective and it will depend on how windy the place is when you are there.

I think you would have to figure out the clothes for you; we don't know how vulnerable to cold you will be. Expect outside temperature to be below zero, nearing minus 10 degrees (although as mentioned, buses and inside rooms are kept warm enough). You are going to a high mountain area known for rapidly changing weather; if you plan to walk for some 10-20 minutes it is better to prepare yourself as warm as possible out of precaution, especially if you haven't experienced such weather before.
