GALA Yuzawa/Niigata

Hi, I will be travelling to Niigata (Yuzawa) in December. Will be there for 2 days and 2 nights (leaving on the 3rd morning).

Seems like the main ski place is GALA. Can you advise what else can I explore in that area? Read that the seafood in Niigata is good.

Are taxis the only travel option around there? And how much will it cost on average?

Besides Yuzawa, any other ski spot recommended?

Thanks.

If you are going to the city of Niigata, Pier Bandai by the shore is good for fresh local seafood.

South of Niigata along the coast not far from the town of Nagaoka is the bigger Teradomari Fish Market.

Gala Yuzawa is THE skiing destination in and around Niigata Prefecture and is easily accessed by less than 80 min shinkansen from Tokyo during skiing season. The gondola car up the mt leaves directly from the train station building.

Thanks for the info William! Are these places far/easily accessible from Yuzawa Grand Hotel? Will probably be staying there.

Thanks.

Yuzawa Grand Hotel is right outside Echigo-Yuzawa JR station. From Echigo-Yuzawa it is 40-50 min shinkansen to Niigata followed by about 10 min bus ride or 20 min walk to Pier Bandai.

Staying on the shinkansen line you can take a short 20-25 min ride to Nagaoka from Echigo-Yuzawa followed by a 50-55 min bus ride to Teradomari Fish Market. By train you can go to Teradomari but have to transfer to the infrequent JR Echigo Line. Bus from Teradomari rail station to the fish market is less than 20 min and I think it is on the same bus line to/from Nagaoka, not 100% sure though.

Echigo-Yuzawa JR station is also worth a visit for the interesting Ponshukan which has sake tasting, sake onsen and the amazing “rice bomb” of bakudan onigiri.

Loads of ski resorts in and around Yuzawa. Which to choose depends what you are looking to do and what dates in December you will be there. Some places don't open until later in that month.

Some nice little temples, galleries and shrines around but the buses are a bit tricky to figure out. Loads of really good onsen (but the one at the Grand Hotel is great too.)

Hi OnsenGai,

Which would be the most accessible(nearest) ski park from Yuzawa Grand hotel?

Also, if we are looking at taking up ski lessons, do we need to book in advance or would booking when we are there be fine too?
