Planning to go Hokkaido in early Dec...Advice needed

Hi,

My family is planning to go to Hokkaido sometime in early Dec, however would need some advice from fellow forumers:

1. Is Dec a good time to go Hokkaido? We don't ski, so besides skiing what else is interesting there?

2. Intend to stay aboue 8-9 days, what is the best route of visit? Looks like trip will start from Sapporo and move out to cities/ towns and back to Sapporo.

3. What is recommended mode of transport hopping from cities to cities? Is renting car of travelling by train better option?

4. If we drop the idea of going to Hokkaido altogther, where else is good to explore in Japan e.g. around Tokyo/ Osaka vicinity? Anyway, we intend to stopever in Tokyo for a few days after Hokkiado before retunring to Singapore.

Thank you!

1. The usual tourist sites are open in December, but this is "new" japan so there are not so many cultural or historical sites. But if you look at this Forum and any web info for Hokkiado, or a guide book you 'll see what is here.

2. Sapporo/Otaru - Noboribetsu - Hakodate is good...or sidetrip to Soukyou and the zoo at Asahikawa.

3. Train is fine for most places.

4. Maybe go to a book shop and get a guidebook...or look at the Japan Tourism site on the web!

Hey Wong

Get yourself a JR Rail Pass if you plan to travel lots in Japan. Cheaper that way. JTB office at Takashimaya, Ngee Ann City, sells them.

If you are going to Japan for the first time, try Tokyo, Nara, Kyoto, Osaka (in that order because of train route). Nara can be a day-trip whereas the rest can stay for 1-2 nights.

Highlights of Osaka, lots of eating and side trips, perhaps to Himeji Temple. Kyoto has lots of temples too. A visit to the fish market in Tokyo would be nice... least it shows you where our salmon and tuna sushi comes from...

Buy a lonelyplanet and read up on those cities.

Hi Amanda,

What will be the typical temperature in Hokkaido in Dec?

Was thinking of renting a car and hop from cities to cities with the lugguage. Taking train can be a chore with heavy lugguage.....

Is it safe to drive during Dec in Hokkaido? If we start off from Sapporo, what is the route you would recommend for say 5-6 days?

Read the "Before You Go" - "Weather and When to Go" info on the left column of this website.

Is it safe to drive during Dec in Hokkaido? Yes, but be careful early am and late afternoon.

If we start off from Sapporo, what is the route you would recommend for say 5-6 days?

North to Asahikkawa and the zoo -and Sounkyou or Ashidake to see snow.

Or south to Noboribetsu and Hakodate.
