Hi Maya,

Utoro and Rausu are tiny villages - in the evening most people eat in their hotels or guest houses.

There are a few local eating places - but not much English information.

In Utoro down by the harbor there are seafood (delicious crab!) tourist places - not at all smart - really like eating in a fish market with low wood tables and cement floors.

Right in the village center is Shiretoko Station of the Journey - an actual restaurant with excellnt seafood...but again, very cheap and cheerful.

You should have the evening meal of the place you are staying in.

Lunchtime there are various small local eating places...the tourist center in Utoro has a restaurant too.

Oh, that's really useful, thanks Amanda!

We are likely to stay in an onsen hotel in Akan prior to Utoro, to be followed by a night at Tsuruga Abashiri (wedding anniversary). As it's my mom's birthday on our 2nd night in Utoro, I am going to surprise my parents with a full kaiseki dinner at Shiretoko Kitakobushi. I don't want them to get bored with hotel dinners before that, that's why I considered eating out on the first night of our Utoro stay. With your information, I won't run the risk and will book dinner for both nights in Utoro, but go for a cheaper option on the first night so the 2nd night dinner spread will still be a pleasant surprise!

Btw, have you heard of, or tried, any of the following restaurants? They were showcased in a Hokkaido food/travel program (HK people love to eat!) on HK TV, and I think it would be cool to try one or all of them! It's strange though, that none of the websites (I'm guessing here cos can't read Japanese) show the opening/closing times.

Hi Maya, I think I've mentioned it before in one of your earlier posts, seafood in this place is desappointing. We went for the seafood ramen, but the crabs are not as fresh as expected.

Oh, that's too bad, William52. The celebrities who tried it on the TV show said the ramen was cheap and great! Maybe they used the fresh stuff on the TV show. ;)

Anyway, thanks for letting me know. One out, 2 to go!

Cheers,

Yes we saw that TVB show 和味無窮, we went to the place because of that, but it turned out to be disappointing.

Oh, I thought you were Canadian as you live in Vancouver, William! So you speak Cantonese too?

I'm trying to hunt down some of the places featured in that show to take my folks to. Did you try the meal in Abashiri's 北の暖暖 pension (http://www.only-hotsk.com/) too? That sounds really interesting. I'm trying to decide whether to stay there instead of Tsuruga Abashiri for my wedding anniversary, but I can't find many reviews on the place.

Hi Maya, We are Canadians, we moved to Canada from HK 12 years ago.

We haven't been to 北の暖暖, looks good from the website. Perhaps you can tell us about the place when you come back from your trip.

BTW, note that the first 2 places you listed earlier are the same:

Thanks, William.

The 2 restaurants are the same? The websites look different, but I can't read Japanese so it's possible. I guess there's only one left to try!

Cheers,

Maya
