Hokkaido by train in Jun

Hi all,

Me and 2 other girl friends plan to visit Hokkaido this Jun. We will fly to Tokyo. We would like to do free and easy but we do not drive. The places currently in mind are Sapporo, Hakodate, Furano, Biei, Akan and Otaru

1. Can most of the places be accessible by either train or bus?

2. If we took a flight to Sapporo, do we still need to get the JR pass?

3. Is it still worth to visit Farm Tomita in mid Jun?

Thank you.

Hi there

1. Yes, although it takes a little longer. JR Hokkiado has special tickets for popular visitor areas such as Biei and Furano.

2. Have a look at the JR Hokkaido website and think about how many days you want to travel and how far....there is a Hokkaido Rail Pass too and special tickets for limited areas.

3. Farm Tomita in June - yes, it is a BIG business/tourist attraction and they make sure that there are other flowers to see.

Happy planning!

Note that there are many other flower farms and scenic areas (some with free admission) besides Farm Tomita.

Besides Farm Tomita and its sister farm Lavender East, other flower farms and parks in Furano and Biei that do not require admission fee include the following:

Hills of Atom and Zerubu

Hakusei-no Oka Observation Park (Northwestern Hill Observatory Park)

Shinei Hill Observatory Park

Kanno Farm

Shikisaino Oka (a voluntary 200 yen donation entry fee)

Hinode-Koen

Choei Lavender Garden (has to pay for ropeway if going uphill for view)

Saika-no-Sato

Furano Wine House Lavender Garden (lavender fields on the slope just outside the wine house)

Shikagoe lavender park

There are other farmlands and scenic areas around Furano and Biei that do not require admission fee, but are best explored if you have your own wheels.

William gave you a great list (which I should file away for future reference myself!). I actually found Farm Tomita too crowded and a bit touristy. I drove around and enjoyed some of the other areas immensely.

Hi William,

Thanks for the links, they are very useful.

Can anyone recommend a national park?We will prefer minimal hiking. Initially I am thinking of going to Akan, but read some review that it is actually not that fantastic. I saw a photo of a national park before: in the forest with cystal clear pond. However, I can;t recall where is it. Anyone has any idea where is it?

Thank you.

Could this be the one you are referring to!? It’s called Kaminokoike Pond 神の子池. It’s quite difficult to get to by public transport. The nearest rail station is Kawayu Onsen which is still a good 8 km away. There is no bus connection, taxi is the only option. We went there this summer but we drove. The trail leading to the pond though flat is a narrow rugged mt. path.

Less than 30 min drive from Kaminokoike Pond is beautiful Mashu-ko. On that particular day, we went to the area around Kussharo-ko and Mt. Iou in the morning, then Mashu-ko and Kaminokoike Pond in the afternoon.
