taking pot luck

We're thinking of a self drive tour in Hokkaido in April 2011. Will we need to book all accommodation ahead or will we be able to take it as we find it at that time of the year?

Hi

In April you should be able to book accomodation ok - as long as you are not coming the last week of April - because that is getting into the Golden Week Holiday which is a big thing in Japan.

Two points to think about though:

Hokkaido in April is still very wintery. Specially in the center and east and north. The ski areas are still open, the ground is covered with snow and it is sunny and cold. Access to some places is limited (Shiretoko National Park roads etc)

Around Sapporo and south the snow is melting.

Booking accomodation in Japan as-you-go can be hard if you don't speak Japanese. Sapporo, Hakodate, Asahikawa, Kushiro have English speaking staff at the tourist offices and they can help - but otherwise most hotels and guest houses don't have anyone to speak English on the phone.

But - having said that - April can be lovely - spring is in the air and there are not many domestic visitors because new school/job season has just started, so a quiet time to come.
