Traveling to/around Hakone

We are thinking of stopping in Hakone for one day on our way from Kyoto back to Tokyo. The transporation from the train station around the area looks like quite an adventure but I can't figure out how much time it all takes - from train to cable car to ropeway to boat, etc. Do you spend an entire day just travelling around? Is it pretty clear how to get from point A to point B? Is there time to take in a couple of sites or walk around a bit? How long is the train ride from Kyoto? And is it true that if we are travelling with large suitcases but don't want to lug them around all day we can make arrangements at the train station in Odawara to have our bags delivered to our hotel or ryokan to meet up with us at the end of the day? Thanks so much!!

If you do the Hakone Loop from Odawara and don't stop at any place, you'll be back to Odawara in about 4 hours. Of course, people stop at various sites along the way. I'd say you'll be able to stop at a couple of sites before checking in to your ryokan and a few more before heading to Tokyo next day. See this link:

Kyoto to Odawara is 2 hours by the Hikari Shinkansen and 3 hours by the Kodama. There are only a few Hikari trains that stop at Odawara in the morning:

The 8:29, 10:29, 12:29 (and every 2 hours there after) Hikari trains stop at Odawara.

Hakome-Yumoto Station has the luggage delivery service. You'll need to check in your luggage by 12 pm and your luggage will be delivered to your ryokan in a few hours. It costs 700-1,000 a piece. This service is available at your ryokan, too. Check your luggage in by 10am and you'll be able to retrieve it at Hakone-Yumoto Station after 1pm:

We did the Hakone loop recently, following the Frommer's guide closely :

It would be interesting to stop at some sites to walk around and have a meal. But even if you just take the loop, it is quite interesting and scenic - especially the ropeway and cruise on the lake.

The connections are perfect. Where you drop off one mode of transport is the departure point for the next mode of transport.

We stayed 2 nights there so we had the luxury of a full day to move around more leisurely.
