Nice hotel for Shinjuku or Shibuya

Heard Shinjuku or Shibuya are right areas to stay for first time visitor. Dont want budget and dont want to break the bank. Nice clean modern hotel convenient to trains & restaurants. Not into bar scene and love the cultural sightseeing. Willing to pay for clean and convenient. Thanks for your thoughts.

You need to be a little more specific. Are you alone or with someone or a group? What exactly is your budget per night (US$ OK)? Almost all hotels in Japan are clean and safe, nothing to worry about there. You pay for location, size of the room and number of occupants. It's very different from most other places in the world where you do pay for safe and clean, that part is a freebee in Japan.

Basic business hotels range from 8,000 to 13,000 Yen for a double room. Better hotels with more service are probably 15,000 to 20,000 Yen. From 20,000 to 30,000 Yen, you can get into very good 4 star hotels. Anything above (the sky's the limit on prices) and you should start heading into luxury territory.

One thing I didn't mention that Sammy pointed out. You also pay for the level of luxury and comfort but that's common sense. Can you define "modern" in your context? Does that mean western-style? Additionally, can you define what "convenient" means in terms of your tolerance for walking? In Japan, 10 minutes walking (1/3-1/2 mile) can be considered convenient by some.

Thanks for your responses. I'm hoping to stay in the $200-250 per night range. Non smoking is nice and would hope to find restaurants in the surrounding blocks. Looking for convenience to walking around as well as train/metro access. The more I read the more confused it gets! Just want a place to park our bags and get a good night. Dont need Hyatt prices but dont have a problem with classy either! Thanks all!

What occupancy? I would look at the Century Southern Tower in Shinjuku. Location cannot be beat. It sounds like it fits your other requirements, too.

Within Shinjuku, Century Southern Tower fits your budget and has a great location. Keio Plaza has rooms that are in this price range as well, but it is an extra 5 minutes further than CST. Sunroute Plaza is very new, has a good location, but the rooms are smaller.

For Shibuya, Shibuya Excel is a possibility and has a good location just across the station at Mark City. It may be at the upper end of your budget though. Cerulean Tower is nicest but much more expensive.
