Haneda or Narita?

Any ideas about which airport in Tokyo is closer to down town, and closer to the main attractions?

Thank you in advance!

In terms of distance, Haneda is closer (but note the operating hours of Haneda). Narita, while farther from Tokyo, offers many transportation options into Central Tokyo. You can get into Central Tokyo under an hour from Narita.

Example transit times via train:

Haneda Airport to Shinjuku is about 35-45minutes (via Keikyu Line + Yamanote Line)

Narita Airport to Shinjuku is 66 minutes (via Skyliner + Yamanote Line) or 84 minutes direct by Limited Express train.

Flights from Narita will land from the US during the daytime hours (typical early afternoon to late afternoon arrivals). Flights from Haneda from the US will land either late in the evening 10-11pm or early in the morning 5-6am. There are no mid-day arrives into Haneda.

In reality, just go with whatever airport fits your schedule and pricing.

Many people are finding that Haneda late night arrivals and early morning departures are stressful in terms of transit from and to the airport during hours when affordable public transportation is available. This is something to think seriously about before actually booking a flight. Early morning arrivals and late night departures don't have this problem, of course. Also, there are hotels near Haneda.

If you are flying from LAX I highly recommend ANA's flight to Haneda. Leaves LAX around 1 am and arrives at Haneda at 5 am. Ideally you sleep all night and arrive early and have the whole day.

Assuming that flight prices don't differ much, it depends on your scheduling needs. NRT arrivals are typically in the afternoon to late afternoon. Immigration lines are usually longer as well. By the time you get into Tokyo proper, it will likely be around 6pm.

Since you will be flying overnight regardless, an early arrival such as 5am might not be a bad deal. The downside is Japanese hotels typically don't allow you to check-in early. Drop your bags off at the hotel, head out for some fresh air, perhaps head to Sensoji (Asakusa) or Tsukiji where morning is the time to visit.
