travel to tokyo from haneda, early morning departure

Hello!

My daughter and I have a connection from Shanghai to NY through Haneda. We will arrive late afternoon and depart the following morning. I'm wondering if we go to Tokyo on public transit around 5-6pm if we will be able to re-enter the airport to snooze a bit around midnight or so. We have never been to Tokyo and do not speak Japanese.

No worries about the language. You'll do fine with English.

If you don't want to sleep in the airport lobbies, Haneda has nap and shower rooms for fee in the international terminal. haneda-airport.jp/inter/…relaxation.html

There is also a First Cabin Hotel in Terminal 1 (accessible via free airport shuttle). There are hourly rates or overnight rates are 4900-5900yen per cabin. http://www.first-cabin.jp/en/

Both Keikyu train and monorail to the airport stop running around midnight.

If you're traveling with a Chinese passport, you'll need a visa to enter Japan:

I have an american passport, i'm just wondering if we go out to see the town, do we need to be on a train back to the airport by 11:30? if we missed it for some reason, what time is the earliest train in the morning? Our flight departs 7am, so I am guessing we need to check in by 5am (I'm not sure if the luggage will be checked all the way through, but doubt it.)

The first Keikyu train from Shinagawa to HND is at 5:15, and the monorail 5:17. You'll get to HND at ~5:30. That should be early enough for the 7am flight.
