A must visit. Any suggestions?

Hi. We will be spending 20 days in Japan arriving mid Jan 2014. We want to spend some time in snow region and visit the snow monkeys and maybe 5 to 7 days in Tokyo and not sure where else to go?

We would apreciate some help in planning our itinerary. We do like countryside and small towns

Any reconditions of places we should visit?

www.japan-guide.com would be a good site to research. The site has some suggested itineraries.

Too bad you don't arrive in early January and take part in the New Year's celebrations here. Going to Kamakura in the first week of a new year is an incredible experience.

Is it possible to swim with the snow monkey? similar to swimming with the pigs in the Bahamas?

@ Toothxt, i don't think they'll let you swim with the snow monkeys. It is not like swimming with dolphins in Cancun, which we both frequent. You do know that those monkeys have learned to roll snow balls and will probably toss them at you should you try to get into the water with them. I would say nothing is impossible, but should you decide to try, please let us know how it went :)

If visiting the Snow Monkeys stay in Shibu Onsen so you can try out the public onsens. We stayed at Senshinkan Matsuya and they will pick you up from the station, drive you up to the monkey park and drop luggage back to the station.

Like you we also enjoy the smaller towns rather than the big cities (although of course you still need to visit them) Some other places you might enjoy are Takayama and Koyasan (near Osaka) In Kyoto a visit to Arashiyama is a good break away from the busy city. Nara is also a good as the temples are all located in the huge parkland area.

A full description of our trip is posted under the heading 3 weeks, but we did it in Spring so some places may not be as appealing in winter.
