Tokyo to Sendai Shinkansen

We are a group of 4 adults (first time visitors to Japan) looking to catch the bullet train from Tokyo to Sendai, departing Saturday morning 3 Aug (returning on 9 Aug to fly home via Narita). Should we buy tickets in advance, or are we ok to purchase tickets on the day of travel ? Should we reserve our seat ? Thanks for your help.

If you want to take the faster trains, Hayabusa or Hayate, you should book at least one day ahead. These trains are reserved seats only. The slower train Yamabiko usually won't sell out, so you'll be OK buying tickets just before departure.

I had no problem making same day or same hour booking on Hayabusa or any reserved fast shinkansen between Tokyo and Sendai on a weekday. YMMV.

When I went to Sendai on a weekday in April, Hayabusa trains were all sold out for that day. Maybe because it was during Japanese spring holiday, but booking ahead is very easy so better be safe than sorry, IMHO.

You should. The itinerary matches Sendai Tanabata, one of the most popular festival in Sendai.

In any case, you could go to Sendai, but standing for 2 hours in a crowded train.

Thanks everyone, I think I should probably book in advance due to the Sendai Tanabata festival.
