two days in Tokyo need sightseeing advice

We will be on an Azamara cruise in a couple of weeks overnighting in Tokyo. That means we have two days to see the highlights of Tokyo. We have never been to Japan before, speak no Japanese, and need advice. The excursions from the ship are ridiculously high, so we are seeking alternative ways to see the city in a short amount of time. Are city tours available that you'd recommend or is there a way to see it using a hop on hop off bus that is close to where the ships dock. We're a little nervous doing this on our own but anxious to see Tokyo! Please help with your advice and suggestions. Thank you in advance

You'd be alright. Most foreign tourists come to Tokyo for the first time and most do not speak Japanese apart from hello and thank you. All direction signs of use to tourists are in English. If you can manage airport at Pheonix you can manage Tokyo's public transport. You might find yourself lost without a map but that's usual.

I advise you to clarify first which port and pier your ship would be using. After that you can decide on which transport to take to central Tokyo for sightseeing.

Cruise ships tourists have a minority share in visitors to Tokyo so you would not expect tour buses to be at the port (unless those organized by the cruise). Catching taxi shouldn't be hard though. Pay by the meter, no tips.

Also, browse these sights:

Two sets of train maps you would find of use:

An idea for day 1 is to see Eastern Central Tokyo:

Sensoji Temple (Asakusa), Tokyo Sky Tree (Oshiage or Tobu Railway Tokyo Skytree), Ueno Park and its museum or zoo, Akihabara Electric Town, Museum of Edo-Tokyo (Ryogoku), East Gardens of Imperial Palace, Ginza/Yurakucho shopping town.

Day 2 for Western Central Tokyo:

Shnjuku Gyoen National Garden, Takashimaya/Isetan stores (Shinjuku), Meiji Shrine and Harajuku tweens town, Shibuya's stores like Tokyu Hands, Loft, 109, etc.

Hato Bus is a reputed bus tour operator in Tokyo, if you are really unsure about exploring on your own.
