5 days in Tokyo

We are starting our 12 day Japan visit with 5 days in Tokyo before moving on to Hakone, Kyoto and Hiroshima. During our time in Tokyo, we plan to hit the following sites:

- Ginza shopping

- Tsukiji market

- Hama Rikyu Park

- Sumida Ferry to Asakusa

- Senso-Ji Temple

- Imperial Palace Gardens

- Meiji-jingo in Yoyogi Park

- Shinjuku Gyoen Park

- Harajuku

- Shibuya Crossing

- drinks at NY Bar in Park Hyatt

- Golden Gai and Kabukicho

- possibly Yasukine shrine (controversial, perhaps)

Are we missing any "must see" or "must do" sites? We are not interested in Disneyland or the zoo. As we are going in May, we prefer most of our events to be outdoors, not in museums or galleries. We plan to use the subway lines and the JR Yamanote line. We are staying 2 nights in Ginza and 4 nights near Shinjuku station. Thanks for any & all suggestions!

Before you go to Golden Gai, you could check out the izakaya in Yurakucho, which is probably walking distance from your hotel. if the weather is nice you could hit a sidewalk cafe on Omotesando. Ueno park might be worth a stroll - you've omittted Akihabara and Sky Tree - I'm guessing that was intentional?

Thanks Mike.

Yes, we do plan to hit up Yakitori Alley at Yurakucho while staying in the Ginza area.

The sidewalk cafe idea sounds great - will check that out.

We didn't plan on either the Tokyo Tower or Sky Tree, but if the weather is clear, we may rethink that as well.

Both of our hotels are high-rises with reported great views.

Re Akihabara, I love technology but prefer to spend our time in Tokyo outdoors, unless it is raining of course ....

You might also do some shopping at Ameyoko - http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3012.html . If you have more time, you could visit more gardens - http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2099_list.html . You might want to check out the Yanaka area - http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3068.html . Finally, you could consider a day trip outside of the city - http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3051.html

If you want to climb something for a view, the best paid view is arguably Tokyo City View at Roppongi Hills. Sky Tree is very high so it offers a different perspective. Tokyo Tower's view isn't as good. Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building at Shinjuku offers a free view that's decent but not spectacular.
