least crowded time to take the subway

In june we will go from shinjuku to tokyo station to catch the shinkansen to kyoto, my wife is a little bit worried about our 6 year old freaking out if the subway is jam packed , she saw a video of people getting shoved onto trains like sardines and cant get it out of her head, should we just take a taxi or wait until peak hour is done ?

Thanks

First of all, You should go to Shinagawa station instead of Tokyo station.

Anytime between 0930 and 1700 is OK.

Yes, shinkansen terminates at tokyo, but shinagawa is between tokyo and kyoto...

Your wife can rest easy on the 'train pushers'; most of the time it is not that extremely busy, just avoid rush hours 7-9am, and maybe 5-7pm.

Yes, you can. Take the JR Yamanote Line from Shinjuku to Shinagawa.

Actually... the videos of people being shoved in are usually on the JR lines (surface train). There are several subway lines that serve mainly the city center and hence do not really get very packed throughout the day. For example, the Oedo line.

Isn't it better to take the Shinkansen from Tokyo station if you are not reserving seats, and have 3 people in your group?

Agreed. The last time I went to Nagoya on the Hikari, it was a good choice to board at Tokyo cos the Shinkansen got a little packed when it stopped at Shinagawa.

On the other hand, if you have a reserved seat, transfer at Shinagawa instead of Tokyo.
