If you are looking to see it from afar and without having to squeeze with a crowd... perhaps you can try the Bunkyo Civic Center (bit.ly/1hdAWS5). Someone took this pic of the festival from afar: https:/…0264.jpg

Bandai HQ, Komagata-2 crossing, between Kuramae and Asakusa Stations.

MumPlusOne, I had a work meeting yesterday in Sapporo so I couldn't see the Sumida River Fireworks this year. A disappointment. I am sure you had a great time there despite the crowds. It is really something to see the Japanese fireworks at a close distance.

JoanCollins, I couldn't check tripadvisor as often I wished so I've missed your question. The Sumida River fireworks fall on a weekend, so Bandai HQ is closed. People just gather to this hidden spot in front of the building entrance.

I will be arriving in Tokyo on July 24, 2015. My family would like to see the Sumidagawa Fireworks. Any suggestions on how early you need to arrive in the area to secure a spot for viewing? The location in front of the Bandai Headquarters sounds good for me. My family will be in Tokyo for almost 3 weeks. If anyone has suggestions on other Firework shows or Obon Festivals that might be worth checking out, please let me know! Thanks so much!

jtake2015, it's an extremely popular fireworks venue (about a million watching on ground). So popular that unless you buy official viewing spots or secure reservations at restaurants with windows facing the river (which is hard/almost impossible to do), the police would have to urge people to move on walking in circles and not stop or sit in the street so as not to create dangerous best-view hotspots in which pushing might happen. Because of the nature of Sumida River running along buildings, open clear views are a bit hard to find. A small space outside Bandai HQ building is a good place though; when I go an hour before I always find some people sitting and waiting. I think it depends on your family and how picky you are about sitting or standing on a ground and for how long. The actual fireworks lasts for about half an hour, so I think if you don't mind standing for half an hour, you can go just before the time of launch. The traditional fireworks are fabulous and craftsmen launch with pride in their work.
