Around Kyushu

Hi there,

Looking at a route from Fukuoka to Nagasaki to Kagoshima to Kunamoto; planning to spend at least a day in each of the above cities, wondering if there are recommendations or suggestions to any nice places in between them?

Alternative route plans are also welcome and appreciated :)

What time of the year are you travelling ?

How many days do you plan on staying ?

What is your preferred mode of transportation ?

What are some of your personal interest, e.g. onsen, history, museum, nature, theme park, food, shopping ?

each cities have many places to go. If you like to Onsen, may include to Yufuin. If you like nature, there is mountains and oceans every where. need more info what you like and term of travel for advice.

Thanks all for your quick response! :)

Should be there at the last week of April, beginning of May.

Although I'm all for a mixed set of activities - trekking, museum visits, historical places, shopping or eating or park and nature walks. will prefer to see more historical stuff and nature walks or nice scenery

And while on this issue, does anybody know if JR Kyushu sells "flexible" passes instead of the fixed 5 days pass? As I might like to hang around some of the bigger cities or towns. So yes, will prob be thinking of training around the 4 major cities.

Some general suggestions can be found on the following threads.

Note worthy is that the lovely Furusato Onsen in Sakurajima is closed and your time of visit is the busy Golden Week period. There will be crowds and accommodation may prove difficult to get. There are only 3-day and 5-day consecutive rail passes in Kyushu.

Thanks for the good information,

I'm arriving in Fukuoka, and plan to visit Nagasaki, Kumamoto and Kagoshima before heading back to Fukuoka for the return flight.

For these 3 cities, which do you advise to visit first, second and last before going back to Fukuoka?

Hi, you may take train from hakata to nagasaki and ferry from nagasaki (shimbara area) to kumamoto. Kumamoto to/fro Kagoshima is easily reached by train. If you have time, you may consider kurokawa via bus (bus ticket from kumamoto bus terminal), follow by kurokawa to yufuin (bus) and then explore abit of beppu/oita and back to hakata. Or from kagoshima, you could travel southbound to Ibusuki for the hot sand bath.
