2 days in Yakushima

Hi, I will be going to Yakushima in Nov 2014 for 2-3 days and is hoping to have some questions answered.

1) Given my time limit, what would the most worthwhile attractions?

2) My friend and I do not drive, would it be feasible to reach cloud water valley with public transportation? What about other attractions?

3) There appears to be a limited selection of choices of hostels and hotels in Yakushima. We have used Expedia, Agoda,Trip Advisor, and Booking.com. What other places can we find a place to stay?

4) From the information I read, some of the hikes in the area can take up to 10 hours. Would it be a suitable choice for a beginner?

Thanks so much!

This is a helpful site for Yakushima, and the owner/hike guide Steve is great too. There's links for hiking, dining, lodging all in English. http://www.yesyakushima.com/

1) I think you probably should do a hike or two, with different scenery or terrain. There's flat hikes and mountain hikes. It probably won't be beach season.

2) If you join a tour, I think they can pick you up. There are public buses too but then you're at the mercy of the limited bus schedule.

3) Check YesYakushima lodging links or you can try jalan, rakuten, jtb...if you know what hikes you are going to do, it will be helpful to choose lodging close to that location since most hikes start early in the morning since it's normally a long day. Most of the popular hikes will start in the east/northeast side of the island.

4) I would recommend a private tour guide if you have budget for it. You will get more out of your hike instead of waiting for everyone else in a large group to catch up, and your time will be used better and you won't get lost vs if you were planning on doing it on your own. My guide recommended that I not do the jomon sugi tour since it gets crowded and it's a long walk to see a single tree with a long queue from a viewing platform. As long as you're able-bodied and dressed properly, the hikes are not terribly difficult. There are many hiking boot (highly recommended) and waterproof clothing (not a bad idea) rental shops that are reasonably priced.

1) Do you know how much small group tours would cost? I've looked up some of the private tours and they are pretty expensive. Being poor students on a tight budget, we can't afford having a private guide.

2) As well, this is the plan for my full trip. It would be great if anyone can offer comments. Thanks!

Day 1: HK--> Shanghai (overnight transfer)

Day 2: Shanghai--> Kagoshima Airport (arrive 1:00PM) --> Kirishima--> Kagoshima

Day 3: Kagoshima

Day 4: Day at Sakurajima--> overnight Hibiscus ferry to Yakushima (depart 6:00PM, arrive 7:AM)

Day 5: Yakushima hikes

Day 6: Yakushima hikes--> Ferry to Ibusuki (depart 5:00PM)

Day 7: Ibusuki--> Chiran --> Kagoshima

Day 8: Kagoshima--> Shanghai--> HK

3) As well, I read about sightseeing buses in the area and it appears that they are cheaper than tours. How do those work? They let you off in the middle to sight-see for a certain amount of time to sight see? Are there English tour guides?

4) Nishi-Oyama Station is on my list of places to go as well. Do you think that it's worth it to go there? Is it easy to get to Ibusuki from there? Is it worth it to go to Ibusuki or Chiran?

I feel your plan looks good.

In Yakushima, private tours are pretty expensive as you says. I have taken the Jomonsugi tour but I have gone hiking in Shirataniunsuikyo by myself. If you are a beginner for hiking, I do not recommend to take Jomonsugi tour which takes 10 hours. However, I think you might enjoy Shirataniunsuikyo hike without guide.

You do not need a guide for Shiratani or Yakusugi Land. The trails are well marked.
