Scuba Diving in Okinawa

This question may have been answered... but I am planning two week trip to Japan that will include a few days 3-4 on one of the okinawa islands! We will be looking to go Mid-April (after we see the cherry blossoms on the main island) My husband and I are certified (we just finished a dive at the great barrier reefs). I am having a really tough time figuring out which island would be the best fo visit.

My number one priority is scuba diving sites. We particularly enjoy bright coral/fish sites, and sites known for something for a particular animal (e.g. sharks, manatees, squid) etc. Not sure which dive site would be best for april time frame either.

My second priority would be some nice beaches. However, I am a bit concerned on the weather being too cold to relax on the beach so I would definitely choose scuba diving over beach time.

If you see manta ray, it is Ishigaki( jima) island or Kohama( jima) island (Iriomote Island).

August - October is the best season. There is a possibility of being seen also in April.(50%?)

Iriomote Island

It seems to be popular as a diving spot here if it is Okinawa.

The temperature in Okinawa in April is 18 ℃- 24 ℃,

It seems that the water temperature is about 22- 23 ℃.

It seems to be popular here as well.

Hello haro1210 et all,

I am so happy to find this thread.

I will be visiting Japan from Oct 16-31. 16-22 in Tokyo, 22-26 in Okinawa, 26-31 in Osaka. As you can see I love big cities (and all the food they have to offer). Okinawa will be my chance to slow down and enjoy diving for the first time! I will get certified here in Toronto, Canada before arriving.

I am hoping for some advice and guidance please! Which area would you recommend for a beginner diver like me? What hotels may be the best value where diving is reasonably close by as well as good food. : ) I will be travelling alone but I do like to be comfortable. If highly recommended, I don't mind renting a car.

Any ideas or bits of insight would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Michael

Megumi W,

I'd go with Ishigaki and the nearby islands for diving but here's a link of dive sites and fish usually in those areas.

Hi Michael,

Well for a good choice of food near hotels I'd suggest Naha (but crowded) or Mihama American Village area. As long as you'll have a car you'd be able to get around to the dive sites. Below are links to dive sites, the 2nd link make sure to check the map it has sites graded from 1-5 by difficulty.

That time of year prices have dropped and the Chatan/American village area might be closer to dive spots and not quite as crowded as Naha.

Also if your planning on driving/renting a car don't forget to get your International Drivers Permit in Canada before you travel.
