iPhone 4S bought in Tokushima taking back to Australia

Can I take an iPhone bought in Japan (living and working here for another year at least) contract expires mid 2014, back to Australia and have it unlocked back home. Currently paying quite a lot per month for the privilege, compared to Australia.

I think that's a question you would ask in an Australian forum, or to electric gadgets fan in Australia (although I don't mean that you shouldn't ask here).

Phones are usually tied in Japan to operating companies and you normally can't switch to another service with an unlocked phone (although the situation might have changed in recent years).

It's been reported that many young people in Japan fall into the trap of "smart" phones and end up being enlisted in black books because they can't pay for it. Because of non-payment, they will deprived of rights to loan and use of credit cards (on top of that, being refused to rent apartments which will require clearance from credit research companies).

What you might do is terminate the contract for the smart phone and switch to just normal mobile with basic talking functions. With a laptop or pad you won't be needing "smart" phones.

I've just been through all this having left Japan in April with my 4s.

1. Are you on Softbank contract? You can go into the store and cancel your contract. I did have to pay off the 6months worth of my phone purchase. I might have had to pay a cancellation fee too.

2. warning to all that get an iphone in Japan (wish I'd known this before!)... the handset SIMs are LOCKED to Japan. You can get them 'factory unlocked', while most countries have minimal charges (if not free), Japan is THE MOST expensive, about AUD180!!!!

SO... if you're willing to pay the unlock... otherwise, your iphone is unusable as a phone, but, wifi works fine, and you effectively have an ipod...

There are numerous ways to unlock iPhone4s, even the most expensive "factory" unlock from *3rd party* costs only 90 USD.
