Hi
Yes it will be fine to hire a car.
Hi Jak3 Yes 100% Aussie drivers licence ok.
Just make sure you use a reputable company and it includes Insurance.
Check your Aussie Travel Insurance as it normally includes CDW Insurance, in which case when you take out insurance here, tell them you don't need cdw which will make it a bit cheaper.
cheers
Janet
Thanks guys, great info.
Hi Dianne,
Have read various opinions on this subject, so suggest you check with your Travel Insurance Company when you take out travel Insurance to see what they require you to do.
In Langkawi we have never been asked to present an International licence. All we have needed is our current Australian Licence. We use a reputable car hire company (Kasina), not an "off the street special" company, and have been hiring for some 18 years..
I do know that Kasina do ask some nationalities for an International Licence, but not Australians.
hope this information helps you.
Thankyou janetw yes I would be checking with whichever insurance company we go with but I am a regular forum member on the Bali forum and this question comes up frequently and the advice is pretty constant that for insurance reasons in case of accident that an IDP is needed which is why I queried. Thanks for your respone
Hi
If your licence is written in anything but English or Bahasa then quite often you will need an international licence to hire a car.
Best really to check your travel insurance to see what they require just in case of an accident.
Hi
I’ve just looked this up in preparation for a holiday in Langkawi.
In the FAQ section on The Malaysian High Commission website for Australia http://Www.malaysia.org.au it states that WE DO need an International Drivers Permit to drive or ride a bike in Malaysia.
When you drive you are required to have both your Australian licence and the IDP with you.
I’m presuming the information is correct and we are going to get IDPs, just to be safe.
Cheers.
Hi Trish I agree on getting the IDP as I think even though it might not be a requirement for car hire companies I think travel Insurance could be void without it and that's not a risk we'd be willing to take.
Very sensible of you both. Better to be safe than sorry.
