Gunung Raya Rainforest Soft Trek advice pls

Hi

Has anyone done the self guided soft trek through the rainforest?

We are travelling with 1 child @ 3 yrs old and 1 infant of 11 months old. If we take a taxi to Gunung Raya peak, will it be too difficult for us to explore the forest and see the wild life and how long will it take to walk down the stairs path to the base? All suggestions of walking routes and advice will be much appreciated.

frankly, i would not do this with two small children. the path is steep and not kept clear. the place where it ends is no longer cared for, and i have been told it has become a hangout for addicts.

an easier walk, though still challenging, would be to climb up the steps to the top of seven wells. you should see birds and monkeys. [don't feed them; they bite]. at the pools at the top, there is a clearly marked and quite well maintained trail which you can follow for as long as you feel you want to.

please take sensible precautions - have cell-phones and keep checking the signal. make sure someone knows where you are going and when you will be back. be aware of the weather conditions.

there have been cases of parties becoming lost on mat cincang, and the trail is not much used.

Hi thanks very much for your reply and suggestions. Good to find this out before we get there. Just had a quick read on 7 wells waterfall. There are about 600 steps to go up. Will we still see some Malaysian birds and wild life if we only walk up part of the way? With the children, don't think we can make it all the way to the top?

Hi

Yes you should see lots of birds and wildlife, especially macaque monkeys, if you walk up to the Seven Wells Waterfall. There is no need to go right to the top anyway.

Do watch out for the monkeys though, they can be very cheeky and try to steal any food or water that you may be carrying.

many people with children walk only a short way up, then follow the signs to the bottom of the waterfalls. you can bathe in the pools at the bottom. there are usually many macaques in this area - i would not personally take food up there.

the monkeys are attracted to plastic carrier bags - many people take picnics so they expect these bags to contain food.

whether or not you see birds really depends on the time of day, and how many other people are there. you will usually have more luck if you go early in the day.

where are you planning to stay? if you let us know, i can probably suggest other places to go. one place you and your children might enjoy is the mardi agro centre, where many different fruits are grown and you can taste and learn about them.
