oh dear. this is not easy to answer!

'malaysian' denotes citizenship, not ethnicity. due to the complexities of doing business in malaysia, most restaurants will be 'authentic malaysian' - even KFC!

the three main ethnic cuisines in this poly-ethnic country are Malay, Chinese and Indian. in my opinion, the best place to try these, if you are looking for a high-end 'good' restaurant, is privilege, which is two minutes from the danna on foot. it serves good fusion food, tailored to the western palate, and offers a set tasting menu for each of the three main cuisines. it also has a good wine list.

further away, [you will need a taxi] is nam at bon-ton, which serves an excellent malay platter.

on telaga harbour, where the danna is, you can get indian, chinese, spanish, brazilian, arab and there is a great bakery serving good coffee and meals, owned by a former malaysian prime minister [can't get much more 'authentic malaysian' that that!].

some of the most interesting [and cheapest] malay food can be bought from stall in the night markets. you will need a hire car to get to these, or take a trip from your hotel. if you have a car, watch out for roadside stalls which pop-up at different times. but be aware - some innocent-looking fried foods carry nuclear chilis at their heart...
