sea-jellies. again...

i have received a copy of a letter written by a couple from the netherlands, who recently visited tanjung rhu. their young daughter was stung by an unidentified sea-jelly whilst paddling on the beach at the rhu.

she reacted very badly and was taken to the hospital in kuah. there, she was treated with antihistamines, and discharged, having been advised she was fit to travel. tellingly, the parents were told 'it could not be dangerous; there are no dangerous jellyfish here'.

they flew to k.l. intending to fly back to the netherlands. their daughter became very sick indeed, and was admitted to intensive care in kuala lumpur. the diagnosis was either irukanji syndrome or a box-jellyfish sting. she remained in hospital for ten days before being allowed to fly home, where her recovery is progressing, but not yet complete.

please take extreme care when swimming in the sea, and note, you cannot rely on being treated properly, or given the correct information, in the island.

full-body swimwear is available in the island, for both adults and children. personally, i swim in a rash-vest and running tights. rampant sailing can provide full-cover swimwear for use on their trips - ask for advice when booking.

responsible tour operators will be aware, and not deny, this problem. so please ask what safe-guards are in place before booking trips involving water. stay safe!
