car hire langkawi

We will be visiting in February and wish to hire a car for a few days. We are anxious to ensure we have the appropriate insurances, and are aware that we do not speak their language. Can you advise of reputable/reasonable car hire company. What insurances are required on Langkawi - we would not want to incurr any further costs should an accident happen. We are only 2 so a large car is not required - could you advise what the going rate is per day?

Thanking you

Car for hire are quite reasonable here in Langkawi. Price ranged from RM40 up to RM250. For Proton Iswara as low as RM40 to RM60. Nissan Sentra, RM60 to RM100. Nissan Serena is about RM100 to RM250. All are insured, becoz in Malaysia, it's compulsory. They need to record your driving licence. You can find these car rental at the airport, ferry jetty and hotels. The locals understand English.

We stayed at Pelangi beach resort last year and we rented the car from the hotel for a day and we paid 160RM. That included insurance and everything.

Usually the best cars can be rented at the airport on arrival, negotiate the price with them. If you are not tall ask for a kancil, small and cheap to run.

You can also try some of the places along Panati Cenang, but the cars at the airport are usualy in the best nick. i.e. everything works including the petrol guage.

If you are arriving into Langkawi, by air, a reputable car rental company is Kasina which has a counter at arrival hall.

Though not required, but for peace of mind and if you have time to do the arrangement, get an IDL.

Kasina also offers CDW-so that in the event of an untoward incident, excess sum is reduced, though one is actually still liable under the non-waiverable damage excess.

If you are not of tall stature, an economical car is the Kancil or if you wish for some comfort space, the Proton Iswara suffice.

You have not indicated the exact date of your travel to Langkawi in February,as Feb16-23 could be expected to be crowded as folks takes advantage of the Chinese New Year holidays.

With that in view, rental rates are volatile based on economic principle of supply and demand.

The Kancil and Proton Iswara will be economical in respect of fuel usage. About RM0.08/km.

Unleaded fuel is RM1.92/litres and our fuel is not taxed , instead subsidised.

Do be careful especially driving at night or dusk time, local kids weave out from attendants lanes, and also water buffaloes.

Check thoroughly the vehicle before signing on dotted lines- general condition of body(dents and scratches), functions of brakes, and if you are mechanically inclined even the engine oil level and radiator water level.

Most will come with almost empty fuel tank or the fuel gauge needle close to "E". So, when filling, do check that fuel gauge needle is functioning; some in my previous experience, does not, even on a Peugeot Convertible, and also on a Mitsubishi, and a Nissan Sentra. So, having filled up, I took the fuel receipt back to the company and ask for a replacement vehicle, and amount contra-off against replacement vehicle. On few occassions, even the odometer and trip meter are not functioning(together with fuel gauge needle), which was really "scary" to say, as really could not

tell if running low on fuel.

Hope you will not experience these slight inconveniences.
